Description

Reydon Cottage is a house dating back to the 18th century, with significant remodelling and enlargement occurring circa 1830-35 and later 19th-century additions. The front and sides are built of gault brick in a Flemish bond pattern, while the rear is red brick. The roof is slate, with lead rolls to the hips and ridge, and brick dentil eaves. Brick axial stacks provide ventilation.

The original layout consisted of a three-room front range; the central and left rooms have now been combined, with a stair hall situated between the centre and right-hand rooms. The circa 1830-35 alterations likely incorporated a two-storey rear outshut, which included a study to the right and a kitchen to the left, with back stairs and a pantry in between. The left end of the outshut appears to have been raised later in the 19th century.

The east front has an asymmetrical design with four windows. The upper windows are 4 over 8 pane sashes, while the ground floor windows are 16-pane sashes with flush panel shutters and flat rubbed brick arches. A doorway is positioned to the right of the centre, featuring a moulded doorcase with an open pediment on brackets, a rectangular fanlight with intersecting glazing bars and reeded transom, and a 19th century flush panel door. Further 19th-century sash windows with glazing bars are located at either end of the front, and casement windows are found at the rear.

Inside, much of the 19th-century joinery remains. A notable feature is a mahogany chimneypiece in the centre room, including quatrefoils, shields, and cusped panels, along with an iron grate. A panelled cupboard and bookshelves are found in the study, and the kitchen has a large fireplace with a bracketed shelf. The staircase has stick balusters and a moulded hand-rail that ramps up to column newels. Smaller 19th-century wooden chimneypieces are present in the upper chambers, and panelled doors are throughout.
