Description
The Post Mill Roundhouse is a round structure from the mid-19th century, which once served as the base for a post mill. It features a late 18th-century trestle and is built of gault brick, topped with a boarded conical roof that is partly missing. The building is circular in plan and stands three storeys tall.
On the exterior, there are openings on the ground and first floors at each quarter, with small-paned cast-iron windows set under segmental brick arches. The west side has a boarded entrance door, while the south side features a first-floor loading half-door. There is also a later doorway on the north side.
Inside, brick piers support the oak trestle from the late 18th century, with the main post cut off just above the joint with the quarter bars. The first-floor structure is unusual, consisting of four beams that span between the piers to create a square, within which are further squares set diagonally, leaving a central octagonal void. The second floor contains three bins and a sack hoist bollard that was used for engine-driven machinery, including a pair of millstones that have since been removed.
Historically, this mill was one of the tallest in Suffolk and was dismantled in 1907. The remaining roundhouse is a notable example from the period when the mill was raised due to encroaching residential development.
