Description

High House is a farmhouse with a rear wing dating from the 16th century, which underwent alterations in the 17th century. The front wing, likely from the mid-17th century, along with various later extensions, creates an L-shaped plan. The building is timber framed and plastered, featuring a front wing with an original colourwashed brick gable end on the left side. Each wing has one roof slope covered with plain tiles and one with slates.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall with an attic and has a three-window range consisting of sashes with glazing bars in flush frames. The doorway features a six-panel raised and fielded door, flanked by pilasters, a frieze, and a pediment. To the right side, there is a late 18th-century colourwashed brick extension that is set forward and has one window range with tripartite sashes in flush frames. The original brick parapet gable end on the left side includes an integral stack, and there are two 18th-century leaded casements at the rear.

The rear wing has two original mullion windows on the south side, and its gable end showcases a notable 17th-century six-light mullion and transom window, along with two additional original mullion windows. Inside, a ground floor room in the rear wing features 17th-century ornamental plasterwork with a running vine motif, which includes two ceiling panels and parts of the frieze. The front wing has a brick fireplace with a four-centre arch on the first floor, and much of the timber framing is exposed, partly due to 20th-century internal alterations. The rear wing also retains the remains of a cross passage, which includes a blocked external doorway and two triangular-headed service doorways.
