Description

Glemham House is a mansion that was rebuilt in 1814 by Samuel Kilderbee, as noted on a plaque on the north side. Above this plaque is a datestone from 1708, which may have originated from the previous house. The building is constructed of grey brick with a moulded brick cornice and features a stucco porch and a shallow pitch slated roof. It has two storeys and presents a symmetrical entrance front with five windows arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern. The windows are sashes with glazing bars set in cased frames, topped with flat brick arches. The left two bays are painted to resemble windows, while the central window is highlighted by a broad architrave with fluted pilasters.

The single-storey flat-roofed porch is flanked by engaged Ionic columns beside the entrance door, which is an impressive 8-panel door with raised and fielded panels, accompanied by narrow sash windows on either side. The garden front, facing south, has a seven-window range arranged in a 3:1:3 pattern, with sashes similar to those on the entrance front. The first-floor windows are fitted with louvred shutters. The central tripartite doorway features pilasters and an entablature, leading to glazed doors, and is topped by a three-light segmental-headed window.

To the north is the servants' wing, built of red brick faced with grey brick and topped with a slated roof, featuring an eight-window range with sashes that have glazing bars. Inside, the staircase hall boasts a plaster vault and a circular lantern, with a staircase that has a wrought iron handrail. The interior also includes fine 6-panel mahogany doors with inlay.
