Description
The gateway, balustrading, and steps over the ha-ha, located 110 metres south of Orwell Park School, is a ceremonial structure that provides access from the south lawn of Orwell Park to the lower lawn beyond. It was built around 1873 and is situated on a grassed bank elevated above the general level of the lawn, approached by a flight of steps on either side. Another flight of steps leads directly from the gateway to span the ha-ha. The structure is made of dressed limestone. The pair of gatepiers features panelled faces, moulded cornices, and gadrooned urns with carved swags on top. A lintel of scrolled wrought ironwork spans the piers, although the pair of wrought iron gates below are no longer present. Each flight of steps is flanked by solid balustrading, with square sunk-panelled piers at both the top and bottom. At the upper level, on either side of the gatepiers, there is a short length of open balustrading with turned balusters.
