Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Hitcham Almshouses are a pair of almshouses built in 1654 for Sir Robert Hitcham, whose will is dated 1636. They consist of two identical parallel ranges, positioned about 7 metres apart, with each range containing a pair of dwellings. The buildings feature a gable front, are one storey high with attics, and have a parapet gabled front wall made of red brick, which includes tumbled-in brickwork at the parapets. The side walls are recessed and constructed of rendered masonry, while the rear gable is also made of red brick. The roof is plaintiled and has 19th-century gabled casement dormers. There are external chimneys at the rear made of red brick. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements, some of which have small panes, and the entrance doors are boarded and date from the 19th century.
