Description

The Ship Inn is a public house, likely dating from the 14th century. It is a rare example of a modest aisled hall house that has undergone significant alterations from the 15th century onwards. The building has one storey and attics and was converted into a three-cell house by the 17th century, retaining only the rear aisle. It features a timber-framed structure with rough-cast exterior and a thatched roof, which includes an internal chimney made of red brick. There is a 19th-century lead-clad dormer with a small-pane sash window, along with 19th-century sash windows and entrance doors, each topped with a pentice board supported by brackets.

Inside, a central aisled open truss has empty trenches for passing-braces and dovetail housings for tie-beam braces on the cambered tie-beam. Although the front aisle has been removed, the arcade-plate remains, complete with housings for lap-jointed arcade-braces. The closed truss to the right shows signs of a further bay that is open to the hall at ground level but has a loft supported on knees above. This, along with the closed truss at the left-hand gable, may have been renewed in the 15th century but still retains the aisled form. The coupled-rafter roof may be original but has been extended in the 15th and 17th or 18th centuries. The building is believed to have served as a pair of estate cottages until the 19th century when it became a public house originally named "The Musket."
