Description
The Nacton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920. It is located prominently on a small triangle of grass at the junction of Ipswich Road and The Street, in the center of the village.
The memorial features a small Latin cross atop a tall, tapering octagonal column, which sits on an octagonal plinth above a conical structure made of brick and stone. This is set on a paved brick octagonal base. The cross, column, and plinth are all carved from Clipsham stone, and the memorial stands approximately 5 meters high.
The main inscription, which is incised and painted black, is displayed around three sides of the octagonal plinth and reads: "THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED TO THE GLORY OF GOD & TO THE HONOUR & GRATEFUL MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914–1918."
The names of the 18 men who died in the war are carved around the two stone bands that are part of the conical structure below the octagonal plinth.
