Description
The Bomb Ballistics building at Orford Ness is a 20th-century structure featuring a mass concrete ground floor and a brick observation room above. It has a square plan, measuring approximately 8 meters by 4 meters, and stands nearly 7 meters tall.
The ground floor consists of a single room that opens to the north, with door jambs infilled with brick that likely originally held a double wooden door. Above this is the flat-roofed observation room, which is accessed by a modern galvanised steel staircase leading to double doors on the east side. The southeast corner of the observation room is cut away, featuring an angled wooden observation window. The west wall contains a steel-framed window, likely from the 1950s, while the north wall has a 12-light metal-framed window with a concrete sill and lintel. The staircase also provides access to the roof observation platform, which has an armoured steel observation point at the southwest corner.
Inside the ground floor, there are two large concrete plinths that once supported a ground speed camera and a camera obscura with a plotting table, which are no longer present. The upper storey is supported by two original rolled steel joists and two galvanised steel frames added in 1995.
