Description

29 High Street is a house with origins dating back to the 16th century, but it has been so altered that no original features from that time remain. Its current appearance is from the 20th century, having been rebuilt in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of rendered and colourwashed brick, topped with concrete corrugated roof tiles. It has two storeys and an attic, arranged in one bay. There are plank panelled doors on both the right and left sides, each with plain overlights above. The left-hand door used to lead to a passageway at the rear. The ground floor features one late 20th-century Venetian window, while the upper floor has one late 20th-century top-hung casement window. The roof is gabled with a rendered and reduced internal stack at the north gable end. There are 19th-century extensions at the rear, which are now lit by 20th-century casements. A rear terrace was built in 1940 as a Bofors gun platform. Inside, there is a stick baluster staircase, with the balusters replaced in the late 20th century, and a ramped handrail from the mid-19th century. One two-panel door from the 18th century remains on the first floor. The building is included for its group value.
