Description

Archers Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century and late 18th century. It features a timber-frame and brick construction with a pantile roof, while the rear slope is covered in corrugated sheet. The building has two gable end stacks and is arranged in an L-plan, with a 17th-century timber-framed main range and a late 18th-century brick wing that projects forward on the left side. The cottage is single storey with an attic. The entrance is located on the wing at the angle, featuring a door with a 20th-century casement window to the left and a tiny window above. To the right of the main range, there is a 2-light casement window, while the wing facing the gable has a small 2-light casement. On the left end, both floors have a 2-light casement in the gable end, and there is a similar casement in the right gable end. A door is located at the rear of the house.

Inside, the main range retains heavy scantling framing on the long walls and a coupled rafter roof with collars. The tie beams have been cut, and a floor was inserted, likely in the late 18th century. There is a late 18th-century open fireplace with a copper to the left. The wing also retains an open fireplace with a bressumer and wide hood, along with a winder stair beside the stack. The roof of the wing is from the late 18th century, and several plank doors are present in both parts of the house. This cottage, which was once an inn, has seen little alteration since the late 18th century.
