Description
Quay House is an early 18th-century building with alterations, located on Quay Street. The ground floor now sits 3 feet below road level, closely abutting it. The front wall is painted brick, rising as a parapet above the older roofline. The central portion of the building projects forward by 4 1/2 inches, featuring double ogee curved bays on each side. A brick corbelled cornice runs along the top, culminating in a central pediment. A circular window now occupies the centre of the front, replacing an original square window. Three-light sash windows with glazing bars are set within slightly cambered flat arches that curve to fit the bays. A wooden door with eight panels is set within panelled reveals, topped by an arched radial-bar fanlight. The door surround includes a wooden case with reeded pilasters and an open dentil and bracket pediment. An original Adam marble mantel has been installed within the building. A left-hand wing is one storey and an attic, with a pantile roof and brickwork, painted. This wing has three dormers and two small casement windows at ground floor level, which is now a half-basement. Quay House is part of a group with numbers 6 to 8 on Quay Street.
