Description

The Middleton War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921. It is made of Sicilian marble and is prominently located at the center of the burial ground, about 50 meters south of the Church of the Holy Trinity, which is listed as Grade II*.

The memorial features a plain Latin cross with an intricately carved foot, set on a substantial octagonal plinth and a single-stepped square base. The foot of the cross is adorned with a laurel wreath that encircles the inscription "1914/ 1918."

The main inscription on the plinth reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF/ MIDDLETON/ WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR./ THEIR MEMORY/ LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE." Additionally, the names of the fallen are carved on three other faces of the plinth.
