Description

The Old Church of St Andrew, originally the parish church and now a mortuary chapel, dates back to the 14th century, although the west tower may have Saxon origins indicated by the long and short work at its corners. The chancel has been demolished and replaced by a 19th-century stuccoed apsidal end to the nave. The west tower, constructed of stucco on flint rubble, is built in two stages and features stepped angled buttresses, flushwork at the base, and an embattled roof. Each side of the tower has two-centred pointed cusped arches for louvred bell openings, with a loop on the north side. The nave is made of flint rubble and has stepped buttresses with stone quoins, while the decorated windows are mostly restored from the 19th century. The roof is plain-tiled, and the west doorway to the tower appears to be an original feature from the 14th century. Inside, there is an arch-braced hammer beam roof, and in the northwest corner of the nave, there is a brass depicting three figures: an ecclesiastic, a civilian, and a lady, dating from around 1430. The early 15th-century octagonal font has been relocated to the 19th-century church of St Andrew in Melton.
