Description

The Eastern Bridge over the River Deben is one of a pair of identical road bridges built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of English bond brick with ashlar coping. On the downriver side, there is a central basket arch made of brick voussoirs, flanked by retaining walls that curve forward. The top of the parapet features ashlar coping that is flush with the walling and has fluted tool marks along the edges. The western end of the parapet has been largely rebuilt with a cement parapet, although it follows the outline of the original structure. The upriver side is similar, but its parapet has not been rebuilt. This bridge is paired with the Western Bridge over the River Deben.
