Description

The Western Bridge over the River Deben is an early 19th-century road bridge, one of a pair of identical bridges. It is constructed of English bond brick with ashlar coping. On the downriver side, there is a central basket arch made of brick voussoirs, flanked by retaining walls that curve forward. The top of the parapet features ashlar coping that is flush with the walling and has fluted tool marks along the edges. There are some minor areas of patching on the road side of the parapet. The upriver side is similar in design. This bridge is paired with the Eastern Bridge over the River Deben.
