Description
The Wenhaston War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Portland stone and is located prominently on the eastern boundary of the cemetery, approximately 60 meters southeast of the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade I listed building, and near 1–3 Church Cottages and 4 Church Cottages, both of which are Grade II listed.
The memorial features an equal-armed cross atop a tapering octagonal column, which is set on an elaborately carved square plinth with a three-stepped base. The entire structure stands about 3.65 meters high.
The main inscription is incised and painted in black lettering on the east face of the plinth, stating: "IN/ THANKSGIVING TO GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL/ MEMORY OF THOSE/ GALLANT SAILORS/ AND SOLDIERS/ FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR./ 1914 – 1918." The names of those who died in the First World War are inscribed on the three other faces of the plinth.
Additionally, 15 names are inscribed on three sides at the foot of the plinth under the date "1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)." There is also another inscription at the foot of the plinth that reads "1939 – 1945/ (5 NAMES)."
