Description
Monks Cottages is a row of three houses located on South Entrance in Saxmundham. They were built in the early 18th century and have undergone some alterations over the years, including the rebuilding of the left gable end in the late 20th century and the renewal of the pargetting on No. 22 in the 20th century. The houses feature a plastered timber-frame, with No. 22 being pargetted. The roofs are covered with machine tiles and plain tiles, with a ridge stack positioned centrally on Nos. 22 and 24, and at the left end.
The exterior presents a two-storey façade with five windows. Notably, No. 26 has a higher roof compared to Nos. 22 and 24. Each house has a six-panel door; No. 22 has a 19th-century door, while Nos. 24 and 26 have 20th-century doors. The ground floor features four late 18th-century three-light metal casements, and No. 22 has an additional late 20th-century casement to the right of its door. On the first floor, there are four late 18th-century three-light metal casements and one 20th-century two-light casement. At the rear, there is a two-storey outshut. The interior has not been inspected.
