Description
Church Farmhouse is a farmhouse that was once divided into three cottages but has now been restored to a single dwelling. It dates from the late 16th century or 17th century, with a mid-19th century facade. The building is timber framed, covered in colourwashed render, and has a plaintile roof that was originally thatched. It has two storeys and an attic, following a three-cell, baffle-entry plan.
The entrance front features plank doors at both the far right and far left, with a half-glazed doorway to the left of centre that is now blocked up. Each door is sheltered by a gabled porch supported by moulded brackets attached to wall posts, which have decoratively pierced bargeboards. There are three 3-light casement windows on the ground floor and three similar windows on the first floor. A gable to the left of centre has a 2-light attic window and decorative bargeboards. A rectangular chimney stack with two octagonal flues is located at the ridge to the right of centre, with a similar stack on the left gable end.
The left gable end features Flemish bond walling with a central stack that has offsets, flanked by diapered diamond patterns in black brick. It also has two attic windows with cambered heads and decorative bargeboards. The right gable end has a 3-light window on the ground floor, a 3-light window on the first floor, and a 2-light attic window. Attached to the right is a brick lean-to outshut with a 3-light window. The rear of the building is mostly obscured by a 20th-century outshut with a pantile roof and random fenestration.
Inside, the farmhouse has chamfered ceiling beams with end stops supported by jowled wall posts featuring ogee mouldings. The chamfered joists have run-out end stops. There is a brick fireplace in the hall with a chamfered bressumer that is coved at the top to support the first floor hearth. The walls show close studding, and there is a winder staircase leading from the lobby to the first floor and up to the attic. The first floor features close studded walling with reversed arch bracing and one 2-light window with chamfered mullions. The attic shows thin, deep collars with common rafters.
