Description

Millcroft is a house dating from the early 17th century, with remnants of an earlier structure, and features a 19th-century exterior. The building is 1½ storeys tall and is timber-framed, encased in mid-19th century red brick. It includes a single-storey lean-to at the rear, added at the same time, and has a thatched roof. An extension along part of the south side has a roof slope that runs into the main roof. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a large plain shaft made of old red brick. The house has 2-light and 3-light casement windows with a single bar to the lights, and one eyebrow dormer. The front door is a 20th-century panelled and battened design.

Inside, the framing is exposed, lacking a middle rail, with reversed braces at the corners. The ceilings feature joist ends resting on clamps, suggesting they may be partly inserted, with plain chamfered joists and deep main beams. An additional wall plate has been added along part of the rear wall, where a section of the earlier plate shows housings for diamond mullions and traces of smoke blackening. Some of the studding has been replaced. The chimney stack has two back-to-back hearths on the ground floor, each with open fireplaces, plain lintels, and good original brickwork. The roof is not accessible. There is a large 20th-century extension on the east side, which is not of special interest.
