Description
Grove Farmhouse is a late 16th/early 17th century farmhouse with a T-shaped layout. It is timber-framed and faced with old, very coarse, roughcast, covered with plaintiles. The building features an internal chimney-stack at the junction of the front and rear ranges, with hexagonal shafts that have been rebuilt in a traditional style. The front has three windows: 2-light and 3-light casements with small panes dating to the 20th century. A 6-panel door is topped with an oblong fanlight and flat pediment and is in its original position.
The interior of the front range consists of two cells, one heated and one unheated, separated by a cross-entry leading to the rear wing. The heated room is characterised by a fine ovolo-moulded main beam with stepped stops and an open fireplace with a plain timber lintel. The unheated room has chamfered joists with stepped stops. Original upper ceilings are present, with main beams that are chamfered and stop-chamfered. Other original features include a blocked doorway with a rectangular surround on the upper floor and one 2-light casement window with square leaded panes. The roof structure incorporates one row of clasped purlins and one row of butt purlins with windbraces only one way.
The rear wing is largely a 19th century replacement, constructed from colourwashed brick and covered with black glazed pantiles. It has 3-light casement windows with segmental heads to the ground floor, and a 20th century half-glazed door.
