Description

Castle House, despite its name, has no connection to a castle. A small, earlier section of the house dates to 1727, as recorded in deeds, with the main structure built in 1810. The central three-storey block is of red brick, with piers projecting 4 1/2 inches and segmental arches over at the second floor level. It features wide cornices with mutules, a pediment over a central break, and slate roofing. A brick band is located at the level of the first-floor window sills and at the springing of the second-floor arch. The block has three sash windows with glazing bars, flat arches, and stone sills. The front entrance has a six-panel door with narrow side lights containing diagonal glazing bars, and a segmental radial bar fanlight. A left-hand wing, of the earlier date, was faced with brick in 1810 and has a single six-panel door, a segmental arch, and a fanlight. The south face has three first-floor sash windows with glazing bars and flush frames. To the right is a two-storey older wing, partially occupied as a separate cottage, with one sash window with glazing bars and a flush frame, and a dummy six-panel door with a pointed dummy fanlight. At the rear is a separate 18th-century one-storey building which was formerly used as a school, known as "Harvey's Academy." This building was documented in 1848 as being located at Gothic House on London Road.
