Description

The Red Lion Inn is a house that has been converted into a public house. It dates back to around 1620 and was rebuilt in brick in the early 18th century, with later alterations and a front extension added around 1900. The building features a timber frame that is encased in colourwashed brick, although some of the timber framing is exposed at the rear. The roof is covered with black-glazed pantiles, and there are rebuilt brick stacks at the left end and to the right of the centre. The original layout was a lobby-entry plan.

The exterior is two storeys high with a four-bay range that is highlighted by full-height pilaster strips. A single-storey extension on the right side obscures the ground floor. This extension has a glazed door situated between three 2/2 horned sash windows on the left and two on the right. To the left of the extension, there is a six-panel door with a cross-glazed overlight, followed by a 2/2 unhorned sash window. At the far left, there is another six-panel door with glazed top panels. The first floor is lit by four 2/2 sash windows, with the right pair having horns.

Inside, the ground floor features a left room with bridging beams that have sunk-quadrant mouldings and scalloped jewel stops. The wall plate consists of a reused mid-16th century hollow-moulded beam with subsidiary keel mouldings. There is a blocked fireplace against the left wall, with a winder staircase located to its right. The centre fireplace opening has been rebuilt. The right room also has bridging beams with sunk-quadrant mouldings, scalloped jewel stops, and punched diamond insets.
