Description

This is a fine, timber-framed house dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, located on Chequers Lane in Glemsford. It currently functions as a single tenement. The house shares a similar design to Monks Hall on Low Street, though it is in a less well-preserved condition. It features cross wings at both the east and west ends. The house is two storeys high with attics. The upper storey is jettied across the front, supported by exposed joists. A central gable, added in the 17th century, is also jettied and bears a modern wooden panel displaying the date 1616 in the apex. The east cross wing features a bressummer, carved with billet ornamentation and supported on two curved brackets with moulded capitals that appear to have originally supported shafts. The west wing has carved bargeboards. The building originally presented a three-window front, but numerous small, high-level flanking windows have been added, some on the ground floor are now blocked. Most windows are 2, 3, or 4-light mullioned casements with leaded lights. The central gable features an oriel window on the first storey, accompanied by small, high-level flanking windows. The roof is tiled.
