Description
Monks Hall is a fine timber-framed house located on Low Street in Glemsford. It mainly dates from the 16th and 17th centuries but likely includes the frame of an earlier 15th-century two-bay hall house. The building has been carefully restored and is situated prominently. It has two storeys and attics, with cross wings at the north and south ends, both featuring jettied gables. In the center, there is a two-storey bay from the 17th century that rises to a jettied gable supported by a moulded bressummer. The window lintel is carved with the initials A K above C K and the date 1614. The house has original four and five-light leaded casements, some with original oak mullions and small high-level flanking lights. The north cross wing features a two-storey bay with five lights, while the south cross wing has an upper storey oriel supported by modern brackets. The roof is tiled and has two large chimney stacks, each with three octagonal shafts. Inside, the house boasts a good interior with exposed timber-framing ceiling beams and joists.
