Description
14 and 16 Churchgate are a timber-framed and plastered house dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, built on an L-shaped plan with wings extending to the southwest and southeast. The building is now divided into two tenements. The northwest front has a four-window range, while the northeast front has a two-window range. The windows are double-hung sashes, some with glazing bars. The upper storey is partly jettied on both the northwest and northeast fronts, and features a worn, moulded and carved bressummer. The southwest and southeast fronts have been underbuilt. Gabled porches with modern six-panel doors project on the fronts. The northeast front retains two original mullioned windows with moulded mullions. Inside, the house displays good moulded beams and joists, with carved main beams, including a notable carved dragon beam. The roofs are tiled and hipped.
