Description

The Maltings is a late medieval building of high group value, originally a substantial house with an open hall and crown-post roof, and two crosswings. It was extended northwards during the 16th century and in subsequent centuries. Now divided into four separate dwellings, cottages 2 and 4 occupy the original house, while cottage No 1 is lower and has a gable facing the road. The building was restored in the 20th century. The front exhibits exposed timber framing with plaster infill; with the exception of the hall section, the upper storey is jettied, supported by exposed joists and curved brackets. It has two storeys and a five-window front, featuring casement windows with lattice leaded lights, which are mostly modern but sympathetic to the original style. The doorways are topped with four-centred arches and have boarded doors with fillets. The roofs are tiled, with two prominent chimney stacks, one featuring four grouped octagonal shafts at the north end, and an external stack at the rear.
