Description
The Old Guildhall, also known as Tudor Cottages, is a notable 16th and 17th century timber-framed building located on School Street in Stoke-by-Nayland. It features exposed timber framing with plaster infill and stands two storeys tall. The upper storey jetties out across the entire east front and north side, supported by exposed joists, curved brackets, and moulded shafts with capitals, along with a moulded bressummer. A massive corner post and bracket can be found at the north-west corner. The upper storey is divided into four bays, while the ground storey has eleven bays, separated by moulded shafts with capitals. There is a four-window range with casements that have moulded mullions and lattice leaded lights. An original four-centred arched doorhead from a former doorway remains. The building was restored in the early 20th century and converted into tenements. The current doorways, which are accessed by steps, are boarded and feature fillets. The roofs are tiled, and there is an impressive central chimney stack with six octagonal shafts and moulded bases, rebuilt at the top, set on a rectangular base dated 1619.
