Description
Salter’s Hall is a timber-framed building dating back to circa 1450, situated on Stour Street in Sudbury. It is considered the finest example of 15th-century detail in the town, with subsequent additions and alterations from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. The building comprises two storeys, attics, and cellars, and features cross wings extending to the east and west.
The east cross wing likely dates to the 17th century, with an upper storey projecting on curved brackets. The central portion of the house displays 18th-century features, including a mansard roof and a semi-circular attic dormer window with radial glazing bars, as well as a plaster cove cornice. Modern ground-floor windows have been installed, while the east wing incorporates 17th-century windows designed to complement those of the 15th-century wing.
The 15th-century wing exhibits the most original features, with its upper storey projecting on curved brackets, featuring moulded capitals and shafts. The timber framing is exposed, and a particularly fine oriel window is present on the upper storey, containing much original and delicate tracery. The soffit of the oriel is carved with a figure of a man and some grotesque animals. The ground floor doorway is framed by a four-centred arch. Originally half-timbered, the west side of this wing was later replaced with Victorian flintwork. The building is shown in an engraving from the Gentleman’s Magazine of August 1841.
Salter’s Hall forms a group with numbers 16 St. Mary’s and 19 The Chantry.
