Description
The Chantry is a very interesting restored 15th-century house located on Stour Street. It has two storeys, attics, and cellars, and is constructed with timber framing and plaster, featuring tiled roofs. The building has cross wings on the east and west sides, with the upper storeys projecting. The east cross wing also extends on the east side along Plough Lane and showcases some of the best original features. Notably, it has a fine corner post carved with an angel and a carved bracket above. On the east side, there are remains of shafts and carved capitals that support the brackets of the upper storey. The front of the house has undergone significant restoration, and the modern tracery of the lower windows is designed to match the detail of the adjoining Salters Hall. The timber framing is exposed, and there are National Monuments Record photos available. The Chantry, along with No.16 St. Mary's and No.19, forms a group with Salter's Hall.
