Description
The Meeting Hall Stables, located approximately 30 metres south of Bentley Hall, is a building likely originating as a court house. It has been repurposed as a meeting hall and was recently used as stables. The structure dates from the 15th or 16th century, with later alterations and restorations in the 20th century. It features a timber frame with red brick herringbone nogging infill on the first floor, while the ground floor and one bay of the rear wall are constructed of red brick. The roof is covered with red plain tiles, hipped at the ends and adorned with gablets.
The building stands two storeys high and has a long wall jetty at the front (north). Pilasters with capitals support eight jetty brackets, and there are arched braces on the first-floor walls. The facade includes four mullion windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. An off-centre right doorway has a four-centred arch with a square head and foliate carved spandrels, leading to a nailed board door. There is also a square-headed doorway on the far right, which features a nailed board door. Each return wall has a mullion window on both the first and ground floors, while the rear wall includes three mullion windows on both levels.
Inside, the building consists of five bays, with the central bays open to the roof and the end bays floored, accessed by 20th-century stairs and a gallery. The interior features arched braces to the tie beams and renewed crown posts in the roof. The top plate has a halved and bridled scarf joint. In front of the building, there is an early brick-paved forecourt with a gutter positioned below the eaves of the court house.
