Description
The barns at Redhouse Farm consist of two builds, dating to the late 16th century and the early 18th century. They are timber framed structures with weatherboard cladding, and corrugated iron sheeting to the roofs.
The left-hand barn is of the late 16th century, comprising six bays with added midstreys (small projecting divisions) to the front and rear of the fourth bay. It has a sturdy timber frame with a middle rail joined into the posts; some studs have been replaced. Tie beams have some bracing replacements. The north wall retains original wattle and daub cladding above the middle rail. The roof is a clasped purlin design, which has been repaired with later clasped purlins and additional bracing. A door is positioned in the rear of the second bay. The north midstrey has been partly underpinned with brickwork in a rat trap bond pattern, and has a thin frame with double stable doors. The south midstrey is entirely of brick.
The barn to the right dates to the early 18th century: a five-bay structure with a poor-quality timber frame braced to the top plate. It features beams with knees, a central contemporary midstrey with a pair of doors, and a thin clasped purlin roof.
