Description
The Hintlesham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It was designed by Mr. Charles Mee of Sproughton.
Constructed from Aberdeen granite and York stone, the memorial is located prominently at the southern edge of the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, which is also listed.
The memorial features a small, plain, wheel-head cross that rises from a tall, tapering cylindrical shaft. This shaft is set on a deep square plinth, which rests on a square, three-stepped base, all of which stands on a single-step foundation made of York stone.
On the south face of the plinth, a dedicatory inscription in leaded lettering reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF HINTLESHAM / WHOSE LIVES WERE LAID DOWN FOR US / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914 - 1919 / 1939 - 1945 / THEIR NAMES, INSCRIBED HEREON / SHALL LIVE FOR EVER / IN HOPE OF A GLORIOUS RESURRECTION'.
The names of 22 men who died in the First World War are inscribed on the east and west faces of the plinth, while the north face lists the names of 10 men who died in the Second World War under the heading '1939 - 1945'.
