Description

Walnut Cottage is an early to mid-16th century cottage, formerly a bakery, situated on Lower Street in Sproughton. The building is timber framed and rendered, with a colourwashed brick rear ground floor and a stepped flint and rubble plinth. It has a plain tile roof, gabled to the south and with a smaller gableted section to the north. The cottage comprises two cells.

The architectural style is characterised by an offset internal brick stack and a large external brick stack against the north wall, featuring a brick oven. An east-facing brick porch shelters a double-leaved boarded door, leading to a single boarded door. The east elevation contains two-light timber casement windows on both the ground and first floors. The south gable wall features two ground floor casements, one dating to the 20th century, and one first floor casement.

Inside, a staircase is located against the northwest wall of the rear cell. A fireplace with an early 19th century reeded surround is present in the front cell, along with 18th century cupboard doors. The first floor contains two blocked diamond mullion windows with shutter grooves on the east wall, and two further blocked windows on the west wall which are thought to be of similar design. An arch braced open truss is also visible. There is no access to the roof.
