Description

This is a house, originally one dwelling, later divided into two separate properties at numbers 2 and 4 Lower Street, Sproughton. The core of the building dates to the 16th century, although the front facade was substantially altered in the 19th century. It is timber-framed and now rendered, with a plain tile roof. The house is two storeys high and has a continuous long wall jetty, with lower 20th-century extensions to the north and rear. The jetty is supported by a moulded bressummer resting on plain brackets. There are two 20th-century doors, the one to number 4 being situated beneath a rectangular hoodmould. Two small, multi-paned, two-light casement windows are visible on the ground floor, also each beneath a similar hoodmould. External gable end stacks are present.

Inside number 2, remnants of diamond mullion windows remain, along with grooves indicating the former presence of shutters on both the ground and first floors. There are also chamfered beams with run-out stops, a late 16th-century stack, and a clasped purlin roof. The interior of number 4 was not inspected.
