Description

The Old Maltings is a timber-framed house located on Birch Street in Nayland with Wissington. The house incorporates elements from the 16th and 17th centuries. The eastern section dates to the 16th century, while the western section is from the 17th century. Originally, the front of the house was plastered with 17th-century pargeting. A 20th-century renovation revealed the timber framing, highlighting the different construction periods. The upper storey is jettied across the entire front elevation. The eastern end exhibits exposed joists, along with remnants of moulded capitals and shafts. The house is two storeys high, with a two-window range. It features casement windows with leaded lights, alongside some small, restored original window openings. The front door is a 20th-century restoration of a boarded and nailed design. The tiled roof is topped by a central chimney stack featuring rebuilt, grouped diagonal shafts.
