Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade I listed building located in Polstead Park, approached by a drive from Water Lane. This church dates back to the 12th century, with 14th century aisles, north and south porches, and a west tower featuring a stone spire. The aisle windows and the roof of the south aisle are from the 16th century. The exterior is constructed from flint and stone, while the interior includes Norman brick and Tufa blocks, which may represent the earliest surviving example of English brickwork, according to N. Pevsner. The west tower has a castellated parapet and a stone spire that stands 73 feet high, noted as the oldest surviving stone spire in Suffolk. The west door leading into the tower is a Norman design with chevron ornamentation, while the north door is from the 14th century. The south aisle roof features well-crafted 16th century moulded and carved beams. Inside, notable fittings include a 13th century octagonal pulpit and an early 17th century three-sided communion rail. There is also a 17th century monument above the pulpit and 15th century brasses. The church is situated near Polstead Hall and is recognized for its architectural and historical significance.
