Description
Polstead Hall is a Grade II* listed building located in Polstead Park, approached by a drive from Water Lane. This large white brick structure features a balustraded parapet and a cornice, and it is situated in a former deer park near the Church of St Mary. The original 16th-century house was extensively rebuilt or remodeled in the late 18th century, with further improvements made in 1818-19 by W. Pilkington. There are older buildings at the rear of the property. The roof is slate, hipped, and includes three dormers behind the parapet. The building has two storeys and attics. The southeast front displays two outer two-storey splayed bays, each with a three-window range, and a three-window range between them. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars. A central rusticated porch projects from the front, supported by Tuscan columns in antis. The northwest front features a twelve-window range. Inside, the building retains a 16th-century core and includes 16th-century wall paintings.
