Description

The Market Cross in Lavenham Market Place was built around 1502 by a wealthy clothier named William Jacob, likely replacing an earlier timber cross. The original stepped base remains intact, while the octagonal shaft, which features a capital carved with fleur-de-lys and a ball finial, dates from the 18th century, with the carved date of 1725. The market that took place at this location was licensed by the crown in 1257 and continued until its decline in the 18th century. The Market Cross is also designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
