Description

LAVENHAM MARKET PLACE 1. 5377 Market Cross 23.1.58 II GV TL 9149 50/600 2. Built in circa 1502 by a wealthy clothier, William Jacob. It probably replaced the earlier timber cross. The stepped base is original but the octagonal shaft with capital carved with fleur-de-lys and ball finial is C18 (the shaft has the carved date 1725). The market held on this site was licenced by the crown in 1257 and continued until its decline in the C18. (Scheduled ancient monument).
