Description
The garden wall attached to the eastern face of Tattingstone Place is a Grade II listed structure from the 18th century, with later repairs and alterations, including an early 20th-century Tudor style gateway. Constructed of red brick, the wall varies in height, mainly between 3.1 and 5 metres, and features later capping. It forms the southern boundary of a garden, while the northern wall has been significantly altered, with parts plastered and not eligible for listing. The southern wall includes a spur wall at the southeastern corner, where the Tudor gateway is located. This gateway, said to have been built for the Cobbold Family, features a moulded four-centred arch, a moulded square label, and moulded coping to the pediment. The wall is situated in landscaped grounds to the west of Alton Water Reservoir and is visible from the Tattingstone Wonder. It holds important landscape value and is included for its group value.
