Description
Welbeck House is a late 17th-century house with alterations from the early 19th century. It is located in Brooke. The house is constructed of English bond brick, with a gabled pantile roof and end stacks. The original plan comprised three units, featuring a rear outshut and a central staircase. It is two storeys high, with a three-window front. A six-panelled door, dating from the early 19th century, is set within an early 19th-century doorcase, which has fluted pilasters and a decorative fanlight featuring honeysuckle ornament. Around 1840, two-storey canted bays were added to the front, incorporating cambered brick arches over ground-floor French windows and first-floor windows with 8/16/8-pane sashes and glazing bars. The rear outshut was heightened and altered in the mid-19th century.
Inside, the house features early 19th-century cornices and panelled doors within fluted architraves with roundels, along with early 19th-century fireplaces also incorporating roundels, and late 17th-century stopped ground-floor beams with run-out stops, and chamfered first-floor beams. A dog-leg staircase with stick balusters, dating from the early 19th century, rises within the central unit. The roof retains a late 17th-century butt-purlin structure, although the collars have been removed.
