Description
The Alburgh War Memorial is a substantial sandstone structure located on the west side of the porch of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade I-listed building. The memorial features a plain Latin cross set on a square, three-stepped base. It is situated in a small, square, gravelled area that is marked by four low sandstone bollards. These bollards support a simple chain that encloses the memorial.
The main inscription, carved into the west face of the cross arms, reads "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE BRAVE ALBURGH MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of those who died in the First World War are listed on the west faces of the steps of the base.
Additionally, an inscription on the south face of the middle step of the base states "IN SACRED MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945." Below this, another inscription reads "AT THE COMING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM." The names of those who fell in the Second World War are listed on the top step. All inscriptions are incised and painted in black enamel.
