Description
The boundary wall and gateway at Whitlingham Hospital were built around 1865 by H.E. Coe of Cambridge for Sir Robert Harvey. Constructed from red brick with ashlar dressings, the wall encloses the gardens, running along the west and south sides of the site. It features a plinth, flat coping, and decorative dice with ball finials.
At the northwest corner, there is a gateway with two square brick piers topped with cornices and ball finials on volutes. Curved flanking walls are adorned with wrought iron railings and similar piers and finials, although there are no gates present. The western wall extends approximately 70 meters south from the gateway, leading to square projections facing north and west, which are connected by a rounded corner. A branch of the wall runs east for about 35 meters before turning south to a plain gateway next to the house. This section of the wall has X-shaped openings.
The western wall continues for another 70 meters to a larger square projection facing west, which includes a central rounded bay aligned with the main axis of the garden. South of this, the wall extends approximately 70 meters, featuring square projections facing west and south, linked by another rounded corner. The southern wall stretches eastward for around 100 meters across the garden front of the house, ending with square projections facing south and east, also connected by a rounded corner.
