Description
The timber-drying bottle kiln, built between 1908 and 1929 by J and J Colman Ltd of Norwich, is a Grade II listed structure. It is constructed of red brick with blue engineering brick dressings. The kiln has a circular plan and features a short porchway leading to the firing/loading doorway on the north-east side.
The exterior showcases a bottle-shaped profile, with the porchway featuring a semi-circular tunnel-vaulted ceiling and a metal top-hung sliding door. Ventilation is provided by four circular and three rectangular holes around the perimeter.
Inside, the kiln has a cavity-wall construction for ventilation, with the inner skin rising to a height of 2.95 meters, made from bricks produced by EJ and JP Pearson Ltd of Stourbridge.
