Description

A pair of former railway workers' cottages dating from the mid-19th century (1847), designed by Grissell & Peto, the builders and architects for the Norfolk Railway Company. The cottages are built of red brick, with a rendered finish and original yellow brick detailing; they have a slate roof and a central brick chimney. The design is of a single storey with an attic, featuring a four-window front. Contemporary doors are situated in the centre of each cottage, set within original projecting porches with four-centred arched heads and pediments. Number 4 retains original ground-floor casement windows, while Number 2 has 20th-century plate glass windows. A plain brick string course runs along the front. The roof has gabled half-dormers, most with 20th-century plate glass windows.

The cottages are part of a unique group of planned workers' dwellings in Norwich, arranged around a roughly triangular common yard constructed with flint and cobbles. Previously known as Railway Cottages, they are part of an associated development located in Cozens Road.
