Description

A pair of former railway workers' cottages dating from the mid-19th century, built in 1847 by Grissell & Peto, who were builders and architects for the Norfolk Railway Company. The cottages are constructed of red brick, now rendered, originally with yellow brick detailing, and have a slate roof. They are single storey with an attic, featuring a four-window range. Each cottage has a panelled door (number 8 being half-glazed) and original projecting porches with four-centred heads and pediments. Modern plate glass windows are present throughout. A plain brick string course runs along the facade, and gabled half-dormers light the attic space. A central brick chimney rises from the roof ridge.

The cottages are part of a distinctive group of planned workers' dwellings in Norwich City, arranged around a roughly triangular common drying yard paved with flint and cobbles. They were previously known as Railway Cottages.
