Description
Nos. 2 and 4 Cotman Road is a house dating from the early 19th century, with a later 19th-century south wing and a north extension. It is constructed of painted and yellow brick with masonry dressing and features hipped slate roofs, forming a 'T' shape plan. The original section is two storeys high with two bays, while the later wing is two storeys plus attics and has three bays.
The south facade includes a central door framed by a porch with brick sunk panels, a moulded semi-circular arch with impost mouldings, and a masonry keystone. Above the door is a balcony with pierced stone balustrading. The building has sash windows throughout, featuring rubbed brick and masonry Italianate arches. The central window on the first floor has smaller flanking sash windows that match the width of the balcony. A heavy eaves cornice made from decorated bricks extends over the semi-circular arches of the attic windows.
At the top, there is a central belvedere with pierced balustrading and scroll buttresses. Inside the early block, a notable feature is the large open staircase from the late 19th century, which has cast-iron balusters. The west room boasts an elegant plaster egg and dart cornice and an arch supported by Renaissance Ionic columns.
