Description
Carrow Works Block 60 is a factory building constructed between 1870 and 1880. It is made of Somerleyton brick with brick dressings and features hipped roofs covered in slate, with projecting eaves and exposed rafter ends, along with a weatherboarded lucarne. The building has metal frame windows and is arranged as a rectangular block with three storeys, plus a fourth storey on the quayside or north face.
The south elevation, facing Paper Mill Yard, has a six-window range with segmental-arched windows, where the first-floor windows are set in round-arched recesses. The outer window ranges are blind, and there is a round-arched entrance with an overlight in the fifth window range. The east elevation is divided into bays by a shallow round-arched arcade, with the northmost range being blind. The west elevation shows five visible ranges that follow the same pattern as those on the east, with two ranges at the corner being blind. A partial inspection of the north elevation revealed a lucarne covered in corrugated metal on the top floor, supported by metal brackets.
Historically, from 1926 to 1940, the building was used as the Barley and Groats Mill. By 1960, it was utilized for Colman's Dry Sauces, and in 1991, it was used for Colman's Dry Sauce Mixes. The structures to the east (buildings numbered 61A, B, and C) and west (a lean-to shed and a taller structure to the north faced in corrugated metal) are specifically excluded from the listing.
