Description

This listing describes a flint wall and 19 attached pet tombs, which are Grade II listed. The wall is constructed from flint rubble and brick, while the pet tombs are made of ashlar.

The 19 tombs are arranged in a line running from south to north, with the flint wall forming the eastern side. Each tomb features ashlar kerbs on three sides, with the fourth side adjacent to the wall. Although similar in size, the later tombs are slightly smaller. The most recent tomb is the smallest, distinguished by decoratively chamfered kerbs and an ashlar cover between the kerbs. The inscriptions on the tombs, starting from the southern end, include:

“LADDIE 1899” “LEO 1898” “DUKE 1898” “JOHN DIED APRIL 1891” “LITTLE JOHN DIED – (date illegible)”

The next two tombs are partially buried, making their inscriptions unreadable. The subsequent inscriptions include:

“JIM DIED 1904” “JACK AGED 11” (date illegible) “CHAPPIE BORN 1897 DIED 1907” “CHRIS BORN- DIED-“ (dates illegible) “JOCK BORN 1899 DIED NOVEMBER 19TH 1911” “SNIPPET BORN 1899 DIED FEBRUARY 24 1913” “DON BORN 1903 DIED OCTOBER 23 1911” “JO BORN 1911 DIED MAY 2 1921” “RUFUS DIED SEPTEMBER 1922”

The flint wall to which the tombs are attached features three courses of blue bricks at the top and a coping of blue bricks laid on edge. It is supported by several shallow brick buttresses on the eastern side. The wall displays areas of flint of varying sizes, including some in nodule form and others knapped, with a thickness that varies, indicating multiple phases of historical rebuilding. The southern end includes an area of machine-made red brick that was rebuilt in the late 20th century.
