Description
St. Michael's is a former rectory that dates back to the late 16th century, with a significant early 19th-century addition. The building is constructed of colour-washed red brick with black glazed pantiled roofs, while the addition features gault brick with a slate roof. It is designed as a lobby-entrance type house, with an 18th-century extension added to the rear and an early 19th-century facade block on the side.
The original structure has two storeys and an attic, and it was re-faced in the 18th century. It features five bays of three- and two-light casement windows with metal glazing bars set in segmental arched openings. There is a former doorway located opposite the off-centre axial stack, and the steep-pitched roof is hipped from the 18th century. A full-length verandah with a bell-base lean-to roof enhances the front of the house.
The early 19th-century addition includes four bays of sash windows with glazing bars, with the taller ground floor windows rising from ground level. These windows have gauged brick heads and elaborate blind boxes. At the rear, there is a semi-circular headed window with glazing bars in the staircase block. Inside, the former study features very elaborate 16th-century double-ogee moulded beams, and there is a fine early 19th-century sweeping staircase along with decorative plasterwork including roses, cornices, and friezes.
